This is really dope. I got my start on the Internet in the 90's by making and maintaining my own site. It was so easy to meet new people and spend time just clicking through to new and interesting places. Somehow with the invention of social media, the Internet became a very lonely place. I am a professional web developer and I haven't had a personal site in a very, very long time. But now I feel inspired to be a part of something new and active myself.

How did you find the small web?
I randomly started checking out the BBS scene recently. Then I started thinking about protocols and missing the open Internet (not just the WWW as it is today). I somehow came across a Register article about a resurgence of Gopher. I learned about Gemini, which took me to a post at cheapskatesguide.org, and then somehow I ended up here.

Favorite thing about the small web?
People don't shout at each other. They communicate. There is an endless amount of ideas and information that enrich and entertain. There's creativity on display. There's a realization that platforms have been generally void of this and that the Internet is still alive.

Truthfully I never experienced much of the old web, since I was born towards the tail end of it and wasn't allowed to use the internet as a baby. But I'm just old enough that I remember playing Microsoft Solitaire and 3D Pinball on our Windows XP computer and using Pidgin to communicate with family members. I'm largely riding off the accounts of others who saw the old internet firsthand, but there's a charm here that just can't be found in modern social media. The fact that groups like yesterweb exist is thrilling to me.

How did you find the small web?
I stumbled across Neocities and it was all downhill from there. It's amazing the things you find when you go surfing.

Favorite thing about the small web?
It feels so much more personal and interesting. When someone creates a retro-style personal website you can feel the personality and charm oozing off every page. It's harder to get around, sure, but surfing the small web is an adventure every time. Follow some different links and you'll end up somewhere completely new.

Least favorite thing about the current web?
It's simply impossible to be as creative on the modern internet as you can in communities like this. Social media has made it more convenient than ever to connect and share with the world, but in doing so it blocks out the ability to truly express yourself. I can't say it's impossible to make personal connections, but it's impossible to carve out a personal corner of the web that feels like it's your own. Instead all you have is a portfolio of links and nothing else to do but seek engagement and validation. I much prefer the anti-social network, where you put down what you want to see and then reach out and explore others' work at your own leisure.

It's so odd seeing people who don't know about guestbooks and webrings and even forums. People who are older than me, even! Did the old web last longer for poor families like mine who held on to the CRT longer? Don't know why it would when the shitty new stuff was always free. But I'm loving this little renaissance. I'm a native of the small web but I re-discovered it when I started getting into ARGs for a while.

Favorite thing about the small web?
Hyper-individuality combines with a collectivist and collaborative spirit in a way that is impossible elsewhere. Plus the graphic design is so much more fun and creative.

Least favorite thing about the current web?
Everything looks the same as everything else, algorithms choke creativity to death, and personal information is sold to corporations who will never care about humans. Also, ADS! Even with adblock it's so fucking exhausting how every major website is designed for ads first and foremost.

THE LACK OF PERSONALITY. With the exception of Tumblr (which is arguably the closest to the old Web spirit out of the major social websites), every other site is like. Here you can change your avatar and if you're lucky you get a banner. Where did the customization go where are my glittery backgrounds and unreadable acid fonts. Why must everything be an equivalent of a sterile hospital (but with ads on every wall). Ugh.

Thank you for uniting many amazing and like-minded people from all over Neocities and beyond!

How did you find the small web?
It happened back in 2017 when I had a random thought about fulfilling a childhood dream of creating my own personal web site. I don't know what caused this in the first place, but I know it drove me to do research on the internet on how to host a website without having to spend money. This is when I discovered Neocities, and the rest was history.

Favorite thing about the small web?
I love the sense of community! By visiting their webpages, you get to understand other people and have an opportunity to put yourself in their shoes. I also love the dedication and creativity they put into their own works.

Least favorite thing about the current web?
The focus on money over people.

zayn.world, very cool website. I believe I found it while looking for old websites on Reddit. And I think I found a thread talking about personal websites or sumthing idk lol.

Favorite thing about the small web?
Definitely the creativity and expression which comes with everyone coding their own website themselves. It so nice, especially once you consider that all the other websites basically have white backgrounds with black text.

Least favorite thing about the current web?
Probably how bland it is. As stated previously, any "modern" looking website is just white background with black text. Maybe some light blue if your lucky.

complete freedom of creativity for everyone and artists, difficult to get bored, cool nice people with cool ideas, warm, friendly and welcoming community, feeling safer and being yourself, a lot mobile friendly for mobile only users (hate popups on the whole screen, also way more friendly than socials, not feeling obligated to have soulless social apps), there's always something new to discover, perfect corner of the current and modern web

the ability to build a space freely and how the interactions with others feel more honest.

the need to please algorythmns and the need some people have to adjust their craft because of that, people being convinced it's the norm and that there's nothing else.

Favorite thing about the small web?
It feels like something actually scenic and not just made-to-work and monotonous; it feels like actually getting to know people through what they write and how they style their websites, not through a gazillion posts on all kinds of topics that just show up and offer information that you are forced to/inadvertently take in all at once.

Least favorite thing about the current web?
Social media sites. It feels like I'm taking things in at a chokingly high speed. Take a look at a post for a moment, scroll through it in the next. There'll always be more - everyone's talking about something - and I find myself having forgotten what I've come to the site to do in the midst of browsing it.
